Moscow [Russia], October 26: Russia has carried out major exercises to test strategic nuclear forces after the country's parliament voted to reverse ratification of the nuclear weapons test ban treaty.
On October 25, the Kremlin announced that the Russian Ministry of Defense had conducted an exercise with the participation of three forces in the strategic nuclear triangle including intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear submarines and war bombers. comb.
President Vladimir Putin personally supervised the exercise and participated in coordination at the Defense Operations Center in Moscow. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the exercise focuses on a hypothetical situation of carrying out a major nuclear attack by strategic strike forces in response to an opponent's nuclear attack.
The test also aimed to assess the military leadership's readiness to command strategic nuclear forces . All objectives of the exercise were accomplished.
According to RT, the Yars intercontinental ballistic missile was launched from the Plesetsk spaceport in northern Russia , successfully destroying the target at the Kura missile test range in the Far East, more than 5,700 km away.
The Tula nuclear submarine launched Sineva ballistic missiles from the Barents Sea while the Tu-95 strategic bomber launched multiple cruise missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
The exercise took place just weeks after Putin announced that Russia would not conduct a nuclear test unless the United States did it first. On October 24, the Russian Federation Council (upper house) passed a bill to withdraw ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
The National Duma (lower house) has previously passed this bill and now only awaits President Putin's signature. The CTBT has not officially taken effect because some countries such as the US and China have not ratified it while Russia has done so since 2000.
