Mexico City [Mexico], October 3: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador criticized the US's "unreasonable" military aid to Ukraine, saying Washington needs to spend more resources to help Latin American countries.
President Lopez Obrador has long called for the US to spend more money to support economic development in Central America and the Caribbean to reduce migration pressure.
During his daily press conference on October 2, Mr. Lopez Obrador criticized the US Congress for not providing money to the region, before mentioning the controversy in the US over the interim budget bill that included new aid for Ukraine is not included.
"I'm just looking at why now they don't agree to aid the war in Ukraine... But how much money have they spent on the war in Ukraine? 30 to 50 billion USD for the war. That's the thing." The most absurd thing you can do. And it's a damaging action," Reuters quoted the Mexican president as saying .
"So they really have to revise their strategy and learn to be respectful. This is not the time for them to ignore the Mexican government," Mr. Lopez Obrador said.
The Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico declined to comment. The US State Department did not immediately respond.
Mr. Lopez Obrador, a leftist leader, has maintained a neutral stance in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and criticized Western military aid to Kyiv. He also proposed peace negotiations to end the fighting .
Two weeks ago, the leader defended the presence of a Russian military unit in the weekend parade commemorating Mexico's independence day, following harsh criticism that Mexico had facilitated the armed forces. Moscow forces appeared.
However, Lopez Obrador's government has supported several major United Nations resolutions criticizing Russia's role in the conflict.
