Lithuanian president expresses concern about Wagner troops in Belarus

Aug 01, 2023

Riga [Latvia], August 1: Lithuanian President GitanasNauseda has again expressed concern about the presence of Russian Wagner mercenaries in neighbouring Belarus, saying they pose a serious threat to the country's security.
Nauseda said it may prove "really too tempting" for those involved with the Wagner mercenaries to use the soldiers to create provocations against Lithuania, Poland or Latvia.
All three countries are members of the European Union and NATO alliance that share a border with Belarus.
At the same time, however, Nauseda admitted that there were no indications that such provocations were being prepared.
Nauseda made the comments during a visit to the Medininkai border crossing between Belarus and Lithuania.
Wagner mercenaries were relocated to Belarus after a brief failed uprising led by Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin. Belarusian military leaders have said the mercenaries will now train soldiers in Belarus, imparting their experience fighting on the front lines of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. (DPA)
