Arsenal take big step towards league title with victory over West Ham Utd

May 11, 2026

London [UK], May 11: Arsenal survived a huge scare after Leandro Trossard's goal kept the Premier League title race firmly in their hands in a tense 1-0 win at West Ham.
Pep Guardiola's rallying cry of "come on you Irons" on Saturday seemed set to do the trick after Callum Wilson's stoppage-time effort almost did Manchester City a huge favour.
But after an agonizing VAR check the apparent equalizer was ruled out for a foul on Gunners goalkeeper David Raya.
Trossard had struck eight minutes from full-time to keep Arsenal five points clear of their rivals and on the brink of a first title in 22 years.
Now, all that stands between Arsenal and the title is a visit from relegated Burnley and a trip to a Crystal Palace side who will be focused on their Conference League final date with Rayo Vallecano three days later.
For West Ham, the contrast could not be starker. The celebration police will not be required in east London this season.
Needing a win to climb out of the relegation zone, they will instead find themselves four points adrift of Tottenham - who will be uncharacteristically revelling in an Arsenal victory - with two matches left, if the north Londoners beat Leeds on Monday night.
Aston Villa suffered a European hangover as they could only draw 2-2 with relegated Burnley at Turf Moor.
Three days after booking their spot in the Europa League final with a thumping victory over Nottingham Forest, Villa were frustrated by a spirited display from the Clarets, who had lost five straight matches.
Swathes of empty seats reflected what a miserable season it has been for Burnley at home, but Jaidon Anthony gave them an early lead and Zian Flemming clinched a point in the second half after Ross Barkley and Ollie Watkins had scored for the visitors.
A point means Villa are not yet assured of Champions League qualification through the league, although they are four points ahead of Bournemouth with only two games to play.
Elliot Anderson reminded Newcastle exactly what they had to give up with a late goal that earned Nottingham Forest a vital 1-1 draw in their bid for Premier League survival.
Much has been made of Anderson's move to the City Ground from the Magpies in 2024. But the England midfielder showed there was no room for sentiment as his 88th-minute goal won his side a point that moves them to the brink of survival.
Anderson cancelled out Harvey Barnes' opener to increase Forest's gap to the bottom three to seven points.
Elsewhere, Everton's hopes of qualifying for Europe were dealt a huge blow after Jean-Philippe Mateta came off the bench to rescue Crystal Palace a point in a 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park.
