Health minister: More coronavirus tests needed

Apr 01, 2020

Dhaka (Bangladesh) April 01: Health Minister Zahid Maleque has said more coronavirus (Covid-19) tests need to be conducted in order to understand the actual situation of the country.
"I do not want the public to be excluded from testing. This is because without testing, we can never understand the actual situation in the country. I urge all to do more tests and stay healthy. Be good to yourself and protect your family and society."
The minister said this while addressing the daily online press briefing on the Covid-19 situation in Bangladesh on Wednesday.
He also urged those who are suspecting coronavirus infection to undergo tests at any of the testing facilities introduced by the government.
The health minister also added: "We have testing facilities at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital and the Institute of Public Health (IPH) in Dhaka, and a testing facility at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital will start soon."
He also added that testing facilities outside of Dhaka, such as in Mymensingh, Rangpur, and Rajshahi, will start very soon.
"Periodically, testing facilities will be introduced at every medical college," he added.
"These are not just testing facilities. These were made for the public and they need to come forward and take more tests," he added.
Replying to a query on how people are to go out for the tests when the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) had instructed all not to leave their homes, the minister said: "The IEDCR is the expert organization in this regard. As I have said before, people who are feeling ill need to call any of the testing facilities under the IEDCR. There are trained people who will come and collect the samples and present the results after the tests are done."
